Post Mortem

Hello everyone! Paranoic here,

First off, I would like to thank anyone who downloaded, played, made videos about the game, donated or commented. I really appreciate that you took the time to do it and all feedback whether good or bad is welcomed.

I’d like to tell you guys about my experience with this project, for whomever it’s out there who wants to know a little more about what went into its design and what I gathered from the feedback I received.

The game was conceived as a very small project without grand ambitions, a short homage to old 90s FMV games, knowing full well that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Games like Phantasmagoria, Gabriel knight 2 and even the infamous Night trap. Embracing B movie like production values, campy acting included.

It was filmed in one night, and then edited and programmed during a three week period more or less. I wanted to know if it was possible to use Adventure Game Studio for an FMV game, since I had only seen it being used for games in the vein of Monkey Island, with low resolutions and pixel art. It turned out to be a great fit, and worked exactly as I intended, it’s a great engine that good devs have used in the past to make great games even to this day.

The basic concept of the game is to mix classic adventure game gameplay of pixel hunting and inventory puzzles with an “escape room” feel. You can die in this game if you don’t think and act fast.

It was quite interesting to see that many of the people who took an interest in the game and made videos about it, (which I quite enjoyed) were mostly younger players who hadn’t played games like this before, and found tedious what I consider are staples of the genre, like pixel hunting , inventory puzzles or the slower pace. Other players found the fact that they could die disappointing, I guess people either don’t expect to die in a game like this, or just don’t enjoy a losing state. But that’s the whole point of the game, the pressure to solve fast the puzzle to escape, it’s a very short game, death adds to the replay value of finally doing a “perfect run” and finishing the game.

On the other hand, that was exactly what the people who did enjoyed it liked about the game, It’s been a while since games like this have come out, there has been a few FMV games out there, but they are mostly just “interactive movies” where you just choose something and the movie continues to play, while they are quite good they are not adventure games.

I never did any sort of publicity or ads for the game, It is and it will remain an anomaly hidden away for anyone who manages to find it here. Nevertheless after reading those very few positive comments about the project I will start considering on producing a sequel/reimagining. So now it’s the perfect time for any suggestions or ideas, what would you like to see in a game like this?

Anyway, stay tuned for more information in the coming months! And once again, thank you.
